What are Omeprazole; Sodium Bicarbonate capsules? (Back to top)
OMEPRAZOLE; SODIUM BICARBONATE (Zegerid®) prevents release of acid in the stomach. It reduces symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach ulcers, or other health conditions. It also prevents injury to the esophagus or stomach. Generic Omeprazole; Sodium Bicarbonate capsules are not yet available.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine? (Back to top)
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
•Bartter's syndrome
•Cushing's syndrome
•edema or swelling, like in the legs or ankles
•heart disease, especially heart failure
•high blood levels of sodium
•high blood pressure
•hyperaldosteronism
•kidney disease
•liver disease
•low blood levels of calcium or potassium
•low salt diet
•taking medicines like prednisone or dexamethasone (steroid therapy)
•an unusual reaction to omeprazole, sodium bicarbonate, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
•pregnant or trying to get pregnant
•breast-feeding

How should this medicine be used? (Back to top)
Take this medicine by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow the capsule whole with a drink of water. Do not take with other liquids or foods. Do not crush, break, or chew the capsule. It is best to take your dose 1 hour before a meal. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What if I miss a dose? (Back to top)
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

•alendronate
•ammonium chloride
•antibiotics like ampicillin, cefpodoxime, ceftibuten, clarithromycin, tetracyclines, and trovafloxacin
•antidepressants like citalopram, clomipramine, escitalopram, fluvoxamine, and sertraline
•antifungals like itraconazole, ketoconazole, and voriconazole
•antiulcer or heartburn medicines like famotidine or ranitidine
•antivirals like atazanavir, delavirdine, efavirenz, and indinavir
•atovaquone
•bortezomib
•bisacodyl
•budesonide
•calcium supplements
•carbamazepine
•cilostazol
•clozapine
•cyclosporine
•dexmethylphenidate or methylphenidate
•diazepam
•digoxin
•disulfiram
•doxercalciferol
•fluvastatin
•gefitinib
•iron supplements
•medicines for bladder incontinence or a weak bladder
•methotrexate
•misoprostol
•octreotide
•pain relievers like acetaminophen, carisoprodol, indomethacin, naproxen, tolmetin, and valdecoxib
•phenytoin or fosphenytoin
•sucralfate
•tacrolimus
•tirofiban
•vitamin B12 preparations
•warfarin

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What side effects may I notice from receiving Omeprazole; Sodium Bicarbonate? (Back to top)
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
•blood in urine
•chest pain or tightness, irregular heartbeat
•confusion or dizziness
•dark yellow or brown urine
•dry mouth
•fever or sore throat
•increased thirst
•mood or mental changes
•pain or difficulty passing urine
•redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth
•seizures
•severe abdominal pain
•skin rash
•slow breathing or shortness of breath
•swelling of the feet and legs
•unusual bleeding or bruising
•unusual weakness, trembling, or muscle pain
•yellowing of the eyes or skin

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
•upset stomach
•diarrhea or constipation
•headache
•nausea or vomiting

What should I watch for while taking Omeprazole; Sodium Bicarbonate? (Back to top)
It can take several days of treatment before your stomach condition improves. Check with your prescriber or health care professional if your condition does not improve or if it gets worse. You can take antacids for occasional relief of stomach pain unless your prescriber or health care professional tells you otherwise.

Take this medicine with caution if you are on a low-sodium diet.

Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Protect from moisture. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
